Hossein Dastmalchian, a loving father and husband who deeply cared for his family, passed away at his home in Overland Park on Monday morning, October 11. His devoted wife of 18 years, Pamela Erie Dastmalchian, was by his side. Born in Tehran, Iran, in 1937 to Mohammad and Fakhri Dastmalchian, he was the youngest of nine children. A gifted wrestler and learner, Hossein left home at age 16 and traveled Europe until immigrating to the United States at age 17. He attended Otero Junior College in Western Kansas, as well as the University of Colorado in Boulder and Lehigh University. His fields of study were both chemical and mechanical engineering which led to his career at Kansas City-based engineering firm, Black and Veatch. On November 6, 1974, he became a citizen of The United States and loved the U.S.A. deeply with all of his heart. In addition to his wife, Hossein is survived by his children, Holly Dowling of Scottsdale, AZ, Heidi Burnett of Laguna Beach, CA, Jeff Dastmalchian of Houston, TX, David Dastmalchian of Los Angeles, CA and Tony Sauceda of Overland Park, KS. “Papa Hoss” as he was known to his family and many friends, was the proud grandfather of eleven grandchildren and one great-grandson. Being a grandpa was one of his greatest joys and he doted on them all with an abundance of love and joy. After retirement from Black and Veatch, Hossein dedicated himself to a number of charitable causes and was especially proud of the work he did as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for the Kansas judicial system, where he helped advocate for the right and safety of children. In addition, he was a proud member of the Senior Barn Players traveling theater group, a speaker and advocate for Medicare education and awareness, and volunteered to prepare taxes at the Johnson County public library for less fortunate people. He loved his wife, Pam, and their marriage was a source of joy and light for all of their friends and family. His smile, warmth and storytelling were beloved by all who knew him and he leaves behind a beautiful legacy in the children who made him so proud.
